An earthquake of a magnitude 6.1 scale has occurred in the region of the Kuril Islands. This happened around the time of 08.49 on the 1st of September. The epicenter was 11 km (which is 7 miles) east of the Severo-Kuril’sk.
The tremor had occurred at a depth of about 91 miles/146 km. There was very light to weak shaking experienced in the northern parts of the Kuril Islands which are situated far south of the Kamchatka Krai.
There have reportedly been no casualties or damage, due to the earthquake. It is going to take up to several hours for the authorities to make damage assessments of the overall region.
It is very likely possible for aftershocks to happen over the span of the coming week. As a result, the officials and authorities may decide to temporarily shut down any transportation infrastructure in the location of the tremor zone. The areas where shaking has occurred can experience utility outages as well.
