Why is the labor movement in the US becoming popular but the union membership rate is decreasing

This summer has been dubbed “the summer of strikes” with Amazon warehouse workers, hotel cleaners, food industry workers, and screenwriters and actors leading the way in the entertainment sector. More than 323,000 employees left their jobs in the first eight months of 2023 in protest of poor pay, perks, or working conditions.

However, at 10.1% in 2022, the percentage of union members is the lowest in decades. Why hasn’t union membership followed the rise in strike activity over the previous few years? According to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there were over 485,000 large-scale strikes in 2018—the highest number since 1983.

The Red for Ed movement in 2018 and 2019 contributed to the widespread strike in part. Teachers from all political parties and regions of the country started demanding higher pay, better working conditions, and greater money for schools.
